A heartwarming story to go along with this, Rachelle and her husband found Rosie maltreated in a Cairo shop and rescued her:

I am Rachelle Fawcett, a student doing an MA in Islamic studies at Hartford Seminary. This is me and my dog Rosie. My husband and I found her terrified and maltreated in a shop in Cairo. We decided we couldn’t save them all, but we could save one. Rosie is now healthy, happy, and hopefully soon will be trained as a therapy dog.
